Inspired by historical artefacts and natural forms, Alice Smith, jeweller and founder of The Line of Sun, work by hand carving each piece in wax before being cast in precious metals and polished to finish the piece. Every detail, setting and texture is crafted with intention, creating truly bespoke pieces that reflect your personal stories.
Each piece is hand sculpted using the ancient technique of lost wax casting – a process whereby each piece is carved in wax before being cast in precious metals. Your ring is then sanded and polished to reveal it’s final form.
This practice allows for a great deal of texture to be created to form organic objects that will become modern heirlooms. This practice has been employed for many a Millenia - a craft which connects us to a lineage artists from the deep past.
Lost Wax Process
‘There's a ritual to finishing a piece that I've come to cherish — the quiet passage from wax to casting to that final polish. Each stage of sanding and buffing feels like a slow unveiling, until the rouge brings it all to life and the textures and diamonds finally reveal themselves, as if they were waiting to be found.’
Ethics & Materials
Each and every piece is designed & made in our Melbourne studio using 100% recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones.
With minimising waste as an important focus - every scrap of metal is saved, then melted down to form new creations.
All our gemstones are carefully hand selected from trusted local suppliers with whom we have longstanding relationships with.
Diamonds & Gemstones
Our lab-grown and natural diamonds are sourced from trusted, well-established local suppliers. Each diamond is GIA or IGI certified, and you will receive a certificate detailing the exact specifications and characteristics of your individual diamond.
Our sapphires and coloured gemstones are sourced through trusted local suppliers. For Australian sapphires, we also work with specialist partners who polish and cut the stones here in Australia, supporting local craftsmanship and ensuring each sapphire is carefully finished.
